The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

At halftime of the JV game the referee is informed by the scorers that the varsity roster of players and numbers  for the visiting team had been submitted and entered into the score book for the JV game. This error wasn’t noticed until two subs went into the game late in 2nd quarter.  The table was so confused when they discovered the numbers were not in the book that they waited until half time to ask the officials what to do.  Subs that had entered earlier had numbers in the book by chance.  The numbers of the starters for the visiting team had matched the players that started in the JV game.

So no names matched and many numbers were not in the book at this time.

Handle the situation.

The names and numbers should be corrected at this time.  This will result in one administrative technical foul being assessed against the visiting team.  Since the issue was handled during the half-time intermission, the 3rd quarter will begin with two free throws being attempted by the home team followed by a division line throw-in opposite the table.  The AP arrow will not be switched.  The visiting team will begin the 2nd half with one team foul.  The visiting team coach will retain the use of the coaching box.  (References: Rule 3-2-2, 10-1-2)
