The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is driving to the basket for a layup.  A-1 releases the ball that hits the backboard and the ring.   As this is happening, B-1 makes a legitimate attempt to block the try and slaps the backboard.  This causes the ball to roll off the ring. The official rules basket interference.  Was the official correct?


The official is NOT correct.  Regardless of the effect on the try, slapping the backboard is never basket interference.  If the official felt that the contact was intentional, then a technical foul charged against B-1 would be appropriate.
