Play of the Day #194 (2021-22)

1 Comment on Play of the Day #194 (2021-22)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A1 drives to the basket on a breakaway and goes up for a layup.  B1 intentionally pushes A1 in the back.  The try goes through the goal.

The coach of Team B claims that, since the try was successful, only one free throw should be awarded.

Is the coach correct?

The coach is NOT correct.  The penalty for an intentional personal foul is always two free throws followed by a throw-in at the spot closest to the foul unless the player is fouled attempting an unsuccessful three point attempt.  In that instance, three free throws will be awarded.

Very Good Play. We, as Officials, need to know that an intentional foul is two shots except in
the unsuccessful three shot attempt, there are three foul shots. Thanks.
