Play of the Day #238 (2021-22)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Both teams are in the bonus.  A1 is attempting the second of two free throws.  As A1 is bringing the ball up to shoot, A5 pushes B5 into the lane and a foul is whistled against A5.  A1 continues his motion and the ball goes through the basket.

Handle the situation.

Because the free throw was not yet in flight when the foul occurred and the foul is by the offense, the ball becomes dead immediately.  No goal can be scored since a dead ball passed through the basket.

Since team control existed (A1 was holding a live ball inbounds), the foul by A5 is a team control foul.  The lane should be cleared and A1 should be given the opportunity to attempt his second free throw.  After the free throw, the ball will be awarded to Team B on the end line.  If A1 is successful, Team B may move along the end line.  If A1 is not successful, the throw-in will be a designated spot throw-in from the spot nearest to where A5’s foul occurred.

Very Good Play. Correct and must be administered correctly, as not to take foul shot away
from A-1. Complete the whole Play. Thanks.
