The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
B1 commits a common foul against dribbler A1. The scorer says that it is the 6th team foul of the half against Team B. Team A throws the ball in and scores a layup. Before the throw-in starts, the horn sounds and play is stopped. The scorer indicates that the common foul was actually the 7th team foul of the half.
Handle the situation.
The basket that was scored is good. This is a correctable error that has been discovered in time. Specifically the error was discovered before the second live ball after the clock had properly started. So the failure to award the bonus free throw situation can be corrected.
A1 will be awarded the bonus free throw situation with no players lined up along the lane. This is a point of interruption play. Since possession of the ball has changed since the failure-to-award situation, play will resume from after the successful goal. Once the free throw(s) have been attempted, Team B will be awarded the ball on the end line with the ability to move along the end line as after any score.
