The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 has received the ball for a free throw and is beginning the motion to shoot when A-2 intentionally pushed B-2 into the lane.  The ball is still in A-1’s hands when this occurs.  A-1 continues the motion and the ball passes through the basket.

Handle the situation.

The foul by A-2 makes the ball dead immediately since the ball was still in A-1’s hands.  Therefore, no point can be scored.  The foul is an intentional personal foul since the ball was live when the foul occurred.

A-1 has not had the opportunity to attempt the merited free throw.  Since there has been another foul, no one will line up while A-1 attempts the free throw since the ball will become dead at the end of the free throw regardless of whether the free throw is successful or not.

After this, B-2 will be awarded two free throws and Team B will be awarded the ball on the end line for a designated spot throw-in nearest to where the foul occurred.
