The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Team B scores with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter to pull within two points. After a timeout, during the throw-in from the end line, A-1 attempts to pass the ball to A-2 who is also out of bounds along the end line. B-2 reaches across the end line and deflects the pass.
Handle the situation.
By rule, this is a technical foul charged to B-2. In this situation the defense is not allowed to touch the ball since it is not being passed into the court. The five-second count would continue as long as the ball is not touched.
Touching the ball being passed along the end line is no different than touching the ball while the thrower is holding the ball during the throw-in.
Team A will be awarded two free throws and the ball for a division line throw-in from opposite the table.
