Play of the Day #292 (2022-23)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

After the first half has ended, A-3 is charged with a technical foul for unsporting conduct.  By mistake the officials administer the free throws for the technical foul before the teams go to the locker room.

Handle the situation.

By rule this is not a correctable error since all free throws that were merited have been attempted.  While penalties do not carry over from one period to the next, in this case the second half will begin with a designated spot throw-in by Team B to complete the penalty for the technical foul.  This is because the technical foul free throws should have been attempted to start the second half.  The alternating possession arrow will not be switched.

Team A will start the second half with one team foul.  The coach of Team A will lose the use of the coaching box since all players are bench personnel during the half time intermission.

Very Interesting Play. Correct and you must administer the Second Half correctly, as the Technical
Foul shots were taken in the First Half. Huge bearing on the Game, possession arrow and foul
count to start the Second Half. Thanks!
