The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 attempts to pass the ball to A-2.  The ball bounces off A-2’s hand and A-2 bats the ball two more times before gaining control of the ball.  A-2 took three steps while trying to gain control.  At no time did the ball touch the floor.

Handle the situation.


This is legal play.  In order to have a traveling violation, the player must have control of the ball.  This situation is just a loose ball being batted by a player.  The number of steps taken is irrelevant.
