1 Comment on Play of the Day #321 (2022-23)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

After the jump ball to start the game, both teams go in the wrong direction.  The error is discovered when the score is 4 to 2 in favor of Team A.

Handle the situation.

All points scored, fouls committed and time consumed shall count as if each team had gone in the correct direction.  The officials shall clearly indicate to the teams which direction they should be going in and then resume play.

Tip:  If you are administering the jump ball at the start of the game, make sure the jumpers are facing in the correct direction by noting where the jumper’s bench is.  The jumper to your right should come from the bench to your right.  The one on the left from the bench on the left.

Very Interesting Play. This happened to me on my first game of my career. Worked with
a Veteran Official and he tossed ball for the jump. I finally realized, what was wrong, and
had a talk with him during a dead ball. Corrected the mistake as described. Thanks!
