The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is fouled in the act of shooting a three-point attempt.  The ball hits the ring and bounces up onto the backboard.  A-5 jumps and grabs the ring to prevent injury.  The ball passes through the basket while A-5 has his hands on the ring.

Handle the situation.

Since A-5 had his hands on the ring while the ball was passing through the basket, by rule this is offensive basket interference.  No goal can be scored.  However, A-1 was fouled in the act of shooting.  Since the try was not successful due to the basket interference, A-1 is awarded three free throws.  Play will proceed as after any normal free throw situation.
