Play of the Day 405 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-9 shows up late to the game during the second quarter.  The coach has A-9 added to the roster.  When the officials go to access an administrative technical foul, the coach claims that a technical foul is only assessed when A-9 enters the game.

Handle the situation.

The coach is incorrect.  By rule, an administrative technical foul is assessed when the name is added to the team member list.  Now, the coach does not have to add A-9 to the team member list until such time as the coach decides to send A-9 into the game.  However, once the decision is made to add A-9 to the team member list, a technical foul is assessed.

Team B will receive two free throws and the ball at the division line for a designated spot throw-in.  The foul is only charged to the team.  No individual is charged.  The coach does not lose the use of the coaching box.

Very Interesting Play. Correct and Team A Coach should have had him listed in the Scorebook
before Referee checked the Book in the Pre-Game. He could state then that A-9 was going to
    be late. Thanks!
