Play of the Day 406 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

During a jump ball to start the game, the ball is deflected by B-1 and is caught by A-3 who is standing on a boundary line when the ball is caught.

Handle the situation.

Team B will be awarded the ball out of bounds at the spot where A-3 caught the ball.  Since the act of touching the ball and not the act of catching the ball is the source of the violation, the ball was actually dead when it was caught.  Therefore, the alternating possession procedure was not started by the catching of the ball.  When Team B has the ball at its disposal, the alternating possession arrow will be set towards Team A’s basket.
