The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Prior to A-1 releasing the ball on a free throw, A-2 fouls B-2. Then A-3 steps into the lane. The bonus is in effect.
Handle the situation.
Since the foul by A-2 occurred before the free throw was released, the ball becomes dead immediately. Since the ball is dead, there can be no free throw violation by A-3. If A-1 did release the ball, there has been no free throw attempt since the ball is dead.
This foul is a team control foul. Therefore, no free throws will be awarded for that foul. The penalty for this foul is possession by the offended team.
A-1 has not yet attempted his merited free throw. The lane will be cleared and A-1 will be given the free throw he is entitled to. After the free throw, the ball will be awarded to Team B on the end line. If the free throw was successful, Team B will have the opportunity to move along the end line. If unsuccessful, the throw-in will be from one of the end line “magic” spots.
