Play of the Day 488 (2025-26)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

B-5 deflects the ball out of bounds on the end line near the corner outside the three-point arc on the right side of the basket in the frontcourt.  A-1 is awarded the ball for a designated spot throw-in from the spot where the ball went out of bounds.  During the throw-in, A-2 steps out of bounds on the left side of the basket.  A-1 passes the ball to A-2 who then passes it to A-3 inbounds in the frontcourt.

Handle the situation.

This is a throw-in violation.  Once the throw-in starts on a designated spot throw-in, the thrower, in this case A-1, is prohibited from being replaced.  Also, during a designated spot throw-in, teammates of the thrower are not allowed to touch the ball after the pass has been released while the ball is outside the boundary plane.  Passing the ball to A-2 out of bounds along the end line violates these provisions.  The only time such an action is permitted is after a score.

Since this is a throw-in violation, the spot of the violation is the original designated spot.  Since this designated spot was outside the three-point arc, the ensuing throw-in spot will be from the 28-foot spot on the sideline on right side of the basket.
