Play of the Day 497 (2025-26)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-5 drives to the basket and is fouled attempting a two-point goal.  The try is unsuccessful.  A-5 got poked in the eye during this action.  The trainer comes onto to the floor to attend to A-5.

Who will attempt the free throws?

Once anyone from the bench comes out to check on A-5, the automatic replacement protocol goes into effect. It does not matter who comes onto the court how short such a visit may be or if the player has earned free throws as was the case here. The rule states that a timeout MUST be used to keep the player in the game.  There are no exceptions to that rule.  That timeout must be requested before any substitute replaces A-5.  If A-5 is ready to go at the end of the timeout(s), then A-5 may stay in the game.

If no timeout(s) is requested, then A-5 must be replaced and A-5’s substitute will attempt the free throws.   If A-5 is replaced, A-5 cannot return to the game after the free throws have been attempted.  A-5 can only return at the next stoppage after the clock has properly started.
