Play of the Day 503 (2025-26)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is attempting a free throw.  The ball hits the ring and then bounces up onto the backboard.  A-5 jumps and gets his hand tangled in the net.  The ring is pulled down and hits the ball as it comes back down.  The ball shoots up and then comes back down and passes through the basket.

Handle the situation.

A couple of seasons back, the basket interference rule was changed to say that if a player contacted the net only, the official had to make a determination as to whether such contact had an effect on the ball.

In this case, such contact caused the ring to be pulled down while the ball was above the ring.  As such, there was no direct effect on the ball while the hand was in contact with the net.  However, since the ring was pulled down and then contacted the ball before returning to its original position, this meets the criteria for a basket interference ruling.

Offensive basket interference should be ruled which results in the cancellation of any goal.  The ball will be awarded to Team B from one of the designated “magic” spots on the end line.
