The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Both teams are in the bonus. There is 3.4 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter. The score is tied. Team A has the ball for a throw-in from the end line in backcourt. A-1 throws a long pass down court. A-4 and B-4 jump to catch the pass near the free throw line. A-4 fouls B-4 just as the ball is arriving and a foul is ruled by the Lead. The clock now shows 2.4 seconds.
Handle the situation.
Since this common foul is by the offense during a throw-in, this is a team control foul. The penalty for a team control foul is ALWAYS possession of the ball out of bounds for a designated spot throw-in at the nearest designated “magic” spot. Team B should be awarded the ball out of bounds on the end line.
Free throws are never awarded for a team control foul regardless of the bonus situation.
Since the foul occurred just before the ball arrived, the clock should not have run. The Referee should order the clock reset to 3.4 seconds.
