The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-5 receives a technical foul for unsporting conduct. Later in the game, A-5 receives a technical foul for hanging on the rim. A-5 leaves the game. The officials fail to notify the Team A head coach that A-5 has been disqualified. Two minutes later A-5 is back in the game and is fouled during the act of shooting. At this point, the table reminds the officials that A-5 had received two technical fouls.
Handle the situation.
This is a mess. The officials failed to follow required protocols involving the disqualification of A-5. As a result, even though A-5 had received two technical fouls, A-5 was not disqualified since his head coach had not been notified. Everything that A-5 did once he returned to the game is legal.
At this point the head coach of Team A should be notified of A-5’s disqualification. This will require the immediate replacement of A-5. The player entering the game will attempt the free throws for A-5.
