The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

During the 3rd quarter, A-1 drives to the basket and runs over B-1 who has a legal guarding position.  The official rules a player control foul.  A-1 does not like the ruling and begins mouthing off at the official.  The official rules a technical foul for unsporting conduct.  As the official is headed to the table to report the fouls, B-1 begins taunting A-1 by clapping his hands in A-1’s face.  The officials rule an unsporting technical foul on B-1.  Handle the situation.

This is not a double or simultaneous foul situation.  One technical foul was for mouthing at an official and the other was for taunting.  They did not occur at the same time.  Each foul carries its own penalty.  The penalties are imposed in the order of occurrence.  The officials award Team B two free throws for the unsporting technical foul by A-1.  Then the officials award Team A two free throws for the taunting technical foul by B-1 and the ball to Team A at the division line for a throw-in.         (References: Rule 10-4-6a, 10-4-6c, 8-6-2)
