Team A is trailing by one point with just seconds remaining in the game.  A1 brings the ball into frontcourt and passes to A2 for a last second attempt.  The crowd noise is high and the covering official is unable to  hear the horn sounding the end of the game.  The ball passes through the basket.  The official thinks that the try was released before the horn sounded and rules the goal to be good.

The three officials get together before they leave the court and the referee, who was the lead official, says that he thinks that the horn sounded before the try was released.  The trail official has no opinion since he could not hear the horn nor see the clock.

Handle the situation.

Team A is in the bonus.  During the last few moments of the quarter, A2 starts the act of shooting.  B2 fouls A2 as the horn sounds ending the period.  Then A2 releases the ball and the ball goes through the basket.

A1 is on a breakaway when B1 catches up and clotheslines A1.  The official rules a flagrant foul.  A2 comes up to B1 and calls B1 an “f*****g asshole.”  A technical foul for unsporting conduct is ruled against A2.

A2 sets a screen for dribbler A1.  A2 allows for sufficient time and distance from defender B1.  However, A2 legs are wider than shoulder-width apart.  B1 is impeded by contact with one of A2’s legs.

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

B1 obtained a closely guarded situation on dribbler A1.  A1 moves forward but does not get head and shoulders past B1.  A1 then retreats.  B1 maintains his closely guarded situation throughout the actions of A1.  At the end of five seconds, the official rules a violation.

The coach claims that a new five-second count should have started when A1 retreated.  Was the coach correct?
