Play of the Day #148 (2020-21)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1, in the frontcourt, attempts to pass the ball to A-2 near the division line.  The ball deflects off A-2’s hand and goes into the backcourt.  The ball is recovered by A-2 in the free throw lane.  The official rules a backcourt violation and awards the ball to Team B for a designated spot throw-in near the division line.

Was the official correct?

The official was NOT correct.  The backcourt violation occurred when A-2 touched the ball.  By rule, the throw-in spot is nearest to where the violation occurred.  This would be on the end line.

  1. THOMAS HANBACH

Officials must know that A-2 touching the ball in the Backcourt Free Throw area is a
    End Line Throw-in. Thanks.
