Play of the Day 481 (2024-25)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is fouled in the act of shooting and the try is unsuccessful.  B-1, the fouler, falls to the floor.  A-1 deliberately steps over B-1 staring at B-1 as he does so.  B-1 pushes A-1.  The Team A coach then curses B-1.  At the same time the Team B assistant coach curses the official who called the foul on B-1.

Handle the situation.

Obviously B-1 is charged with the foul on A-1 and A-1 is entitled to two free throws.  A-1’s and B-1’s actions against each other constitute a double foul by definition since they are directed against each other and occurred at approximately the same time.  Their actions do not constitute a fight since only pushing was involved by B-1.  The double technical foul is for taunting (A-1) and intentional contact during a dead ball (B-1).

The Team A head coach is charged with a direct technical for unsporting conduct for cursing B-1.  The assistant coach for Team B is charged with a technical foul for cursing the official.  Although these fouls occurred at approximately the same time, this is not a double foul but rather simultaneous fouls since the actions were not directed against each other.

The double foul and the simultaneous fouls result in point of interruption plays.  That is, play will resume from the point of interruption (POI).  In this case, the POI is the free throws for the foul in the act of shooting.  Play will continue as after any free throws in the usual manner.

The Team A head coach loses the use of the coaching box due to his direct technical foul.  The Team B head coach loses the right to use the coaching box due to the technical foul on his assistant coach.
