Play of the Day 496 (2025-26)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

During the fourth quarter, A-5 drives to the basket on a fast break and dunks the ball.  A-6, A-7 and A-8 jump off the bench and rush onto the court to high five A-5.

Handle the situation.

A reflexive action by some officials would be to charge technical fouls to A-6, A-7 and A-8.  This would also result in three indirect technical fouls being charged to the head coach who would thereby be disqualified.  However, this is not correct.

Unless there is a specific rule mandating separate indirect technical fouls to the head coach (see fighting/confrontations), only one indirect technical foul should be charged. And only one technical foul should be charged to the team. This is codified in Case Book Play 10.5.4 Situation B which can be found on page 88 in the 2025-26 Basketball Case Book.

The specific language states “In a situation where similar multiple infractions occur at the same time, it is not the intent of the rules to penalize each individual infraction as a separate technical foul.”

In this situation, a single technical foul should be applied under 10-5-2 for the bench personnel illegally entering the court. One technical foul would be charged to the team and one indirect technical foul would be charged to the head coach. No individual bench personnel would be charged. Two free throws would be awarded and the offended team would receive the ball for a designated spot throw-in from the division line opposite the table. The coach would lose the use of the coaching box.
