The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
In the first quarter, neither team is in the bonus. Dribbler A-5 is fouled by B-5. B-5 objects to the ruling and a technical foul is ruled. While the free throws for the technical foul are being attempted, B-5 is talking to his coach near the end of the coaching box. When a free throw is missed, the Team A coach claims that his shooter is entitled to another free throw attempt since B-5 should have been in the backcourt.
Handle the situation.
Except for the fact that no players will line up along the lane, the rules for free throws do not change during technical foul free throws. Although most players will go to the area around the division line, there is no requirement to do so. All players must be behind the free throw line extended and beyond the three point arc. So long as this requirement is met there is no violation.
