The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

The visiting team is late arriving for the game.  Because of the game was delayed from starting, the referee assesses technical foul on the visiting team.  He rules that the head coach loses the use of the coaching box.  Is the referee correct?

The referee is NOT correct.  Whether the technical foul is for not supplying a line-up 10 minutes before the scheduled start of the game or for delaying the start of the game, the technical foul assessed is a team technical foul.  The head coach does not receive either a direct technical foul or an indirect technical foul.  Receiving a technical foul (direct or indirect) is the only way the head coach loses the right to use the coaching box.  (References: Rule 10-1-1, 10-2-1a)

When you say the box, I am assuming you mean how many offensive players can line up along the lane. By rule (8-1-4a) a maximum of 2 offensive players can line up along the lane in marked lane spaces.
