The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Dribbler A-1 has the ball batted away by B-1.  The ball is loose on the floor when both A-1 and B-1 dive for the ball.  B-1 obtains possession.  A-1 attempts to create a held ball situation by using his legs to immobilize the ball.  Handle the situation.

A-1 has committed a kicking violation.  Intentional contact with the ball by the legs and/or feet is, by definition, a kicking violation.    (References: Rule 4-29, 9-4)

It cannot be a violation since the ball has not been placed at the free thrower’s disposal by the official. The shooter has caused a dead ball to pass through the goal.

Paul, here is a situation. A-1 in bounds the to A-2. Rather than catching to inbound ball A-2 elects to use his fist to direct the ball as a pass to A-3. Umpire whistle the play as a violation. Handle the situation?
