Play of the Day #251 (2021-22)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A1 drives to the basket on a fast break.  B1, trying to catch up and block the layup attempt, misses the ball and makes contact with the backboard.  The contact causes the backboard to shake and the ball rolls off the ring.  The official rules basket interference.

Was the official correct?

The official was NOT correct.  Under high school rules contacting the backboard is never basket interference even if it causes the try to miss.  It could be a technical foul if the official rules that such contact was intentional while the try was in flight, on the ring, in the basket or in the imaginary cylinder above the ring.

Very Good Play. If slapping the backboard is intentional, you must call a Technical Foul. there
    cannot be Basket Interference. Thanks.
