Play of the Day #254 (2021-22)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Team B has the alternating possession arrow.  While A1 is dribbling the ball on the right side of the court, B5 and A5 engage in rough play on the left side of the lane.  The official rules a double foul.  The official charges both B5 and A5 with a personal foul.  The official then awards to ball to Team B using the arrow at the spot nearest to where the double foul occurred.

Was the official correct?

The official was NOT correct.  While this is clearly a double foul, a double foul is a point-of-interruption play.  This means that the ball will be awarded to the team that had control of the ball when the double foul occurred.  The throw-in will be from the designated spot out of bounds nearest to where the ball was when the double foul occurred.

The only time the alternating possession arrow would be used in this play situation would be if no team control existed.  This could be the case if such a foul occurred while rebounding a missed try.
