Play of the Day #302 (2022-23)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-5 and B-5 both tap the ball during a jump ball.  A-5 taps the ball a second time.  After this, B-5 catches the ball before it touches the floor or any other player.

Handle the situation.

Jumpers are allowed to tap the ball twice so A-5’s second tap was legal.  However, jumpers are not allowed to catch the ball before the jump ball ends.  The jump ball ends when the ball touches the floor, a non-jumper or an official.  Since that did not happen in this play, B-5’s catching of the ball is not legal.  This is a jump ball violation.

Team A will be awarded the ball for a designated spot throw-in at the spot nearest to where B-5 caught the ball.  When the ball is at the disposal of Team A for the throw-in, the alternating possession arrow should be set towards Team B’s basket.
