Play of the Day #376 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

B-4 is called for the 4th team foul of the 3rd quarter against A-4. He is then assessed a technical foul, which is the 5th team foul of the 3rd quarter. Team A was allowed to shoot the 2 technical foul free throws. Then A-4 was allowed to shoot an additional 2 free throws based on the common foul.

Were the officials correct?

The officials were NOT correct.  The penalties for fouls are always enforced in the order of their occurrence.  The common foul against B-4 was the fourth foul of the quarter and should not have been penalized by awarding free throws.  Normally the ball would have been awarded out of bounds.  However, subsequent to the common foul, a technical foul was ruled.

The 2 technical foul free throws were correct and should have been followed by a throw-in for Team A from the division line opposite the table not free throws for the common foul.

Very Interesting Play. Correct, you have to administer the way the Fouls occurred.
4th Team Foul committed- No Foul Shots. Administer the Technical- 2 Foul Shots,
plus, Team A’s ball at the division line. Thanks!
