The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Team A leads by 9 points with six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. B-1 is bringing th ball up court when he is fouled by A-1 with two seconds remaining. The timer fails to stop the clock and the time runs out with the horn sounding. After the horn sounds, A-1 and B-1 chest up and exchange words. Several team members from each team come onto the court as do coaches and assistant coaches. Some fans also enter the court. No further animosities occur. No one takes a swing at anyone.
Handle the situation.
Some officials are claiming that the team members who left the bench need to be ejected since the game is not over. However, the horn sounded which would ordinarily indicate that the game was over. As such, it would be permissible for bench personnel to be on the court at this point in time. The fact that time needs to be put back on the clock does not change this reasonable expectation.
In this circumstance no ejection of personnel who came off the bench should take place. If anyone had taken a swing at someone, they should be ejected with a flagrant technical foul. However, in this case, that did not happen. If the officials felt it was appropriate, a double technical foul could be issued to A-1 and B-1 for unsporting conduct.
Time should be put back on the clock and the free throws for the common foul should be attempted with players lined up along the lane and play resuming as after any normal free throw situation.
Please keep in mind that if both coaches agree, the game could be ended without playing the last two seconds.
