The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 drives into the lane and B-3 steps in to take the charge. A collision occurs after A-1 has ended his dribble but before A-1 has released the ball on a try. The ball passes through the goal. The Lead signals a blocking foul while the Center is signaling a player control foul. It is Team B’s fifth team foul.
Handle the situation.
By NFHS rule, this is a double personal foul. A-1 and B-3 will both be charged with a foul. The fact that this is Team B’s fifth team foul is not relevant since a double foul is not a common foul. The bonus rule is only applied when a common foul is committed.
The goal is not counted. The fact that A-1 has started a try for goal is not relevant since this is a double foul not a foul in the act of shooting. The ball becomes dead immediately when the double foul occurs in this situation. The continuous motion rule only applies when there is a foul by the defense only.
This is a point-of-interruption play. In this case play will resume with a throw-in to Team A on the end line at the closest designated “magic” spot since Team A had team control when the double foul occurred.
