2017-18 Play of the Day #14

2 Comments on 2017-18 Play of the Day #14

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

On the opening jump ball between A1 and B1, after the ball was legally tapped by one of the jumpers, the ball was tied up by players A2 and B2, without either team having gained possession of the ball. The referee ruled that the original jumpers A1 and B1 should return to the center circle for a re-jump.   Was the referee correct?

The referee was NOT correct.  By rule at the high school level, when the alternating possession procedure has not been established, the ensuing jump ball shall be between the two players causing the jump ball situation.   In this case that means that A2 and B2 should be the jumpers.  (References: Rule 6-4-3 Note, Case Book Play 6-4-1 Situation C(c))

Paul, I had this very play situation in a tournament game last week. I called it as the rule states and there were several players and one of my officiating partners that thought the original jumpers should be the ones to re-jump. Thanks for sharing your Plays of the Day.
