Play of the Day #389 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-5 is attempting the second of two free throws.  While the ball is in the air, A-4 pushes B-4 along the lane and is whistled for the foul.  The ball passes through the basket.

Handle the situation.

Since the free throw attempt has been released and is in the air, the ball does not become dead when the foul by A-4 occurs.  If the ball passes through or remains in the basket, the goal will be scored.

Regardless of the success of the free throw attempt, A-4 will be charged with a personal foul.  If the free throw is successful and Team B is not in the bonus, Team B will be awarded the ball on the endline with the ability to move along the endline as after any score.

If Team B is in the bonus, B-4 will be awarded two free throws.

If the free throw is unsuccessful and Team B is not in the bonus, Team B will be awarded the ball on the endline at the spot nearest the foul for a designated spot throw-in.

Very Interesting Play. Correct, this Play could be misinterpreted as A-4 fouls while the Foul Shot
is in the air. You count the basket and administer the Foul Call on A-4 appropriately. Thanks!
