The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-5 has the ball in the low post.  Simultaneous whistles occur.  The Lead has a foul against B-5.  The Trail has a traveling violation.

Handle the situation.

In this situation, the officials will have to determine which occurred first, the foul or the violation.  If the violation occurred first, the foul is ignored unless it was intentional or flagrant.  If the foul was intentional or flagrant, it will become a technical foul since the ball was dead when the foul occurred.  Anyone on Team A will attempt the free throws and the ball will be put in play by a designated spot throw-in at the division line opposite the table.

If the foul occurred first, the foul will be charged.  If A-5 was in the act of shooting, the ball becomes dead when the violation occurs and no goal can be scored.  If A-5 was in the act of shooting, free throws will be awarded to A-5 since the goal was not successful.  If A-5 was not shooting and Team A is not in the bonus, Team A will be awarded a designated spot throw-in from the closest “magic” spot on the endline.
