Play of the Day #396 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

The coach of Team A is whining and complaining frequently.  After receiving a formal warning for such behavior, the coach continues this behavior.  A technical foul is charged.  The coach is informed that he has lost the right to use the coaching box.

The coach sits down but as the game proceeds jumps up to question rulings by both officials.  This leads to a second technical foul and the coach’s ejection from the game.  The coach goes and sits in the stands.  The coach is informed that he must leave the gym.  Eventually he complies.

A minute later the coach is back in the gym watching the game standing up.  Again he is informed that he is not permitted to be in the gym.  He refuses to leave.

Handle the situation.

At this point in time, the game should be forfeited to the opposing team for failing to comply with the rules of ejection.  If faced with this situation, probably the best approach is to put 60 seconds on the clock and inform the coach that if he has not left the gym when time expires, the game will be forfeited.

Very Interesting Play. Several years ago, had a similar situation. I ejected a Coach. He went out in the hallway.
and a player started to go out there to get a Play. He stated, he had to use the bathroom. I would not let the
Player leave the Gym and had the Game Management escort the Coach to the locker room before we continued. This situation that you presented could happen and you need to handle it appropriately.
    Thanks!

    Hello All,
This exact situation occurred in one of our games on Sunday of the Big Shots tournament at RHSC.
Coach was ejected from a game on the arena court, he then went upstairs but did not leave the building. After the game he returned to the floor to berate the officials and the time clock operator who was also an official.
This is a prime example of why the ejected coach MUST be escorted out of the facility, and not be allowed to hover around the building.
