The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is straddling the division line. A-2 passes the ball from the backcourt towards A-1. The ball hits A-1’s leg that is in the frontcourt and rebounds into the backcourt without hitting the floor in frontcourt. The ball is recovered by A-2 in the backcourt.
Handle the situation.
This is a legal play. When the ball hit A-1’s leg, even thought that leg was touching in frontcourt, A-1 was in backcourt by rule since part of A-1’s body was touching in backcourt (his other foot). Since the ball never touched in frontcourt, it never got frontcourt status. Therefore, it was legal for A-2 to recover the ball.
It should be noted that the ten-second count would continue since there was no frontcourt status for the ball at any time.
