The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Team B has committed four team fouls. B-1 commits a common foul against A-1 while A-1 is dribbling the ball. The coach of Team B objects to the call and receives a technical foul. The table fails to notify the officials about the bonus situation and the free throws for the technical foul are attempted by A-2 who makes both. At this point the table lets the officials know that the common foul was the team’s fifth team foul.
Handle the situation.
Although the free throws for the technical foul were attempted before the bonus free throw situation, this is not a correctable error. The outcome of those free throws stands.
The error of failing to award A-1 free throws will be corrected by awarding those free throws at this point in time. No players will line up along the lane.
This is a point-of-interruption play. At the conclusion of A-1’s free throws, Team A will be awarded the ball for a designated spot throw-in at the division line opposite the table. This will complete the penalty for the technical foul.
