The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Team A is leading by two points with under two minutes to go.  While A-1 is attempting to dribble up the court in backcourt, the ball gets away from A-1.  The ball is headed towards out of bounds when the Lead grants a timeout request to Team A’s head coach.  The ball ends up out of bounds.

Handle the situation.

Granting the timeout request was a mistake.  This is an inadvertent whistle and becomes a point of interruption play.  Although the ball was loose, team control had not ended for Team A.

So, since the ball was in the backcourt, Team A will be awarded a designated spot throw-in nearest to where the ball was when the timeout was granted when play resumes.  Although the timeout should not have been granted, once granted, Team A will get to use the timeout.
